Import and Update SCORM and xAPI Courses - Article
Summary
Imported Courses let you deliver content produced in an external authoring tool while using Eurekos to manage the learning context. A successful import is only the first step: the package must launch, resume, and report the evidence your program requires.
Before replacing a package used by learners, decide whether existing statistics should be preserved and whether the change belongs in the current Course or a separate version. Coordinate content changes with the people responsible for li
Use this article to:
- Choose whether SCORM or xAPI is appropriate for the external package;
- Import a package and understand the available tracking relationship;
- Update externally authored content without losing delivery intent;
- Validate launch, progress, completion, reporting, accessibility, and device behavior.
Prepare a supported package
| Package | Documented support | Preparation guidance |
|---|---|---|
| SCORM | SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 3rd/4th Edition. | Export a valid release package from the authoring tool and retain its editable source. |
| xAPI | Supported xAPI Course ZIP packages. | Confirm the required reporting-service configuration and the supplier's expected launch and tracking behavior. |
| Native Eurekos | .eur through the native import route. | Use this for native content transfer; its page and asset dependencies differ from an externally authored package. |
A file extension does not establish interoperability. For a new supplier or authoring tool, test a small representative package before acquiring or producing a large portfolio.
Import the Course
- Open Courses.
- Select Import, then SCORM/xAPI. Use the separate Eurekos option when importing a native .eur package.
- Enter the Title and a unique Course code. Select Organizations when the Course is intended for specific organizational contexts.
- Under Package, upload the supported .zip file.
- Select the Author, any Co-authors, and the Course Language.
- Choose the appropriate Cloning policy and Launch mode.
- Complete any additional fields available through your platform configuration. These can include content usage and indexing, statistics behavior, Course duration, or Course readiness.
- Select Import and allow the upload and processing to finish.
- Review the imported Course and the launch experience created by your selection.
- Test the package with a learner account in a controlled Training Activity before connecting it to a live program.
The import creates a new Course record on the Courses list. The availability of some fields depends on the package type and platform configuration.
Organizations associates the imported Course with one or more organizations. A Course with an organization relationship can be added only to a Training Activity with a matching organization relationship.
Choose the launch experience for SCORM and xAPI
| Launch choice or dependency | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Launch from a Course page | Provides space for an introduction, instructions, accessibility information, and a clear start action. |
| Automatic launch, where configured | Reduces an extra step but must work with the package, browser, and device. |
| A separate window or tab, where configured | The learner needs clear instructions about returning and completing or closing the package correctly. Browser restrictions can affect the experience. |
| Platform launch-page template | Gives consistent presentation across imported Courses, while Course-specific instructions may still be needed. |
| Mobile launch behavior | Some configurations require a manual start on iOS. Validate the actual SCORM or xAPI route instead of assuming identical behavior. |
If learners encounter blocked windows or incomplete launches, investigate the supported route rather than instructing them to disable browser protections broadly.
Distinguish completion, success, and score
| Evidence | What it can mean | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Progress or location | How far the package reports that the learner has progressed or where it should resume. | The package saves and restores the expected state. |
| Completed | The package's completion condition has been met. | Whether completion requires viewing, a task, or an assessment under the package's own configuration. |
| Passed or success result | The package reports the required success outcome. | The passing policy and how Eurekos receives and uses that result. |
| Score | A numeric assessment result. | Scale, passing requirement, and whether it is the evidence used by dependent rules. |
An externally authored package decides much of its internal behavior. Eurekos cannot infer a meaningful passing result from an animation or visual “Well done” screen if the package does not report it correctly.
Replace or create a new version
To update the package used by an existing imported Course, open the Course, go to Course settings, replace the file in Package, and save. If participants have already started or completed the Course, Eurekos asks whether to Keep or Reset statistics. These choices affect existing learning evidence and must follow an approved policy.
| Choice | Suitable situation | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Replace and keep statistics | A compatible correction that should not require renewed learning. | Existing resume and progress data must still make sense to the new package. Supplier changes to internal identifiers can affect that compatibility. |
| Replace and reset statistics | An approved reset of the existing learning record is genuinely required. | This can affect learners and dependent evidence. Review consequences before confirming. |
| Create a new major Course version | The syllabus, assessment, or expected evidence has materially changed. | Transition deliveries deliberately; a new Course version does not automatically enroll people or replace every connected activity. |
Retain the approved previous package, editable source, release notes, and the decision owner. Package replacement is not a substitute for a controlled re-certification design.
Verify before release
| Scenario or check | Expected result or evidence |
|---|---|
| First launch | The package opens through the intended desktop and mobile route. |
| Exit partway and return | The expected resume state is preserved without falsely completing the Course. |
| Complete without passing, where possible | Completion and success remain distinguishable under the package's rules. |
| Pass the assessment | Eurekos receives the supported result and the intended dependent rule reacts correctly. |
| Replace with statistics preserved | An existing learner can resume or continue as designed; historical evidence remains meaningful. |
| External media or reporting service is required | Authentication, availability, and network access work for the intended learners. |
Troubleshooting
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Import is rejected. | Check supported package version, valid export structure, file constraints, and source integrity. |
| The package opens but progress is missing. | Check the package's reporting configuration, supported service connection, and proper session completion. |
| Learners cannot resume after replacement. | Compare package compatibility and the keep/reset-statistics decision with the supplier. |
| Certificate criteria are not satisfied. | Check whether the package reports completion, pass, or score and whether the certificate references the correct evidence. |
| Mobile launch differs from desktop. | Check the actual device-specific launch configuration and package support. |
FAQ
-
Which SCORM editions are documented for Course import?
The current documentation lists SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 3rd and 4th Edition, alongside supported xAPI packages. Always confirm every package and reporting behavior.
-
Can I edit an imported SCORM Course with the native page builder?
Its internal learning content is normally maintained in the external authoring tool. Make the change there, export a compatible package, and use the supported replacement process. Review the consequences for existing learner statistics before replacing it.
-
Should I keep or reset statistics when replacing a packaged Course?
Base the decision on the learning change, package compatibility, existing evidence, and approved policy. Keeping statistics is not proof that old results remain meaningful for changed content. Test resume, completion, and passing behavior before changing a live package.
-
Does importing an xAPI package guarantee reporting will work?
No. xAPI reporting depends on the supported package and required service configuration. Validate launch, statements or recorded results, resume behavior, and completion in the intended delivery before using it for operational decisions.
