Embed External Content and Use Advanced Page Tools - Article
Summary
Advanced page tools can bring useful external resources and specialist explanations into a Course. Use them when they solve a learning need that a normal text, image, video, or interaction cannot meet as clearly.
An embedded service remains a dependency outside the Course. Its permissions, availability, privacy requirements, and device support must work for the learner—not only for the author who inserted it.
Use this article to:
- Choose the simplest reliable tool for an external or specialist learning need;
- Configure Embedded video, HTML, Code snippet, Math, Page Feedback, and Quickchannel objects;
- Identify security, privacy, accessibility, availability, and reporting dependencies;
- Distinguish displayed content from supported completion evidence;
- Test the saved experience with the intended learner context.
Choose the simplest suitable tool
| Tool or approach | Appropriate purpose | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Normal link or button | Open an authoritative external resource. | The learner leaves the page or opens another view; explain what to expect. |
| Supported HTML/embed widget | Display approved external content within the page. | The external provider must permit embedding, and the platform may restrict supported markup or behavior. |
| Code snippet | Present source code as an example to read and discuss. | Displaying code is different from executing it or providing a development environment. |
| Mathematical content, where supported | Present formulas in a readable form. | Check rendering, accessible alternatives, and the syntax accepted by the selected tool. |
| A supported specialist interaction | Provide a specific learning experience through an enabled content type. | Verify its capabilities instead of assuming a general HTML area can reproduce the same tracking or access behavior. |
Do not embed content simply to avoid maintaining a link. A clear external link can be more reliable and accessible than an embedded panel with its own scrolling and sign-in requirements.
Add an approved external embed
- Confirm the resource may be used for the intended audience and purpose.
- Obtain the provider's supported embed code or URL.
- Insert it through the appropriate Course page tool, using only the supported input.
- Provide a short introduction explaining what the learner should do.
- Add a useful alternative route where embedding may not work.
- Test the saved page with a learner account and the intended device and network conditions.
Do not include passwords, private access tokens, or personal information in an embed or URL. If an external service requires a secure integration or separate identity arrangement, involve the responsible administrator rather than placing credentials in Course content.
Use each advanced object for its intended purpose
- Embedded video displays a supported external video source. Confirm that the source can be reached by the intended audience and that its privacy, cookie, accessibility and tracking behavior is acceptable.
- HTML adds supported markup to the page. Script execution is blocked for security reasons, so do not use it as a substitute for hosting an external application.
- Code snippet presents code as readable learning content with copy and full-screen controls. It displays code; it does not run it.
- Button creates a clear action to a Questionnaire, URL, Archive file or email address. Use descriptive button text that explains the result of selecting it.
If the requirement depends on scripts, authentication or application logic, host that experience in an approved service and link or embed it only after security, privacy, accessibility and data-return requirements have been agreed.

Configure an Embedded video
Use Embedded video to add a video from a provider supported by Eurekos. Paste the video's URL into the object; you do not need to obtain or maintain the provider's HTML embed code. Eurekos recognizes the supported URL and creates the appropriate player.
Supported providers include YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, and Leraar24. The available providers depend on the platform configuration and the URL formats accepted by each service.
Many external videos could technically be inserted through the HTML object. However, use Embedded video whenever the provider is supported because it provides:
- A simpler URL-based authoring process
- Supported video playback behavior
- Basic Progress tracking for views and completion
- Better long-term maintainability
The dedicated integration also separates Course content from the provider's underlying embed markup. If a provider changes its URL structure or player requirements, Eurekos can update the shared integration centrally. Authors do not then need to locate and replace manually maintained HTML embeds across multiple Courses. This does not protect against an individual video being removed, made private, or given a different source URL by its owner.
Use an HTML embed for video only when the provider is not supported by Embedded video, or when an approved requirement cannot be met through the dedicated object.
Choose Embedded video when the source remains external
This approach is useful when:
- An organization maintains videos in a service such as Vimeo for use both inside and outside the learning platform.
- Another internal team owns the video library and is responsible for updating the source.
- A regulator, professional body, partner, or other authoritative source maintains information that should not be copied or recreated.
- Copyright, licensing, or governance requirements make using the authorized source more appropriate than uploading another copy.
Embedding the video does not transfer ownership or remove the need for permission to use it. The external provider continues to control the media, availability, privacy settings, captions, account requirements, regional restrictions, and changes to the individual video. Confirm that the intended audience can access the video and that the provider permits embedding.
An optional platform setting can enable automatic YouTube looping. When enabled, the video starts again after it ends. Looping does not create another recorded view.
Understand how embedded videos are tracked
Embedded external videos are included in the Videos section of participant Progress statistics. An external video is marked as viewed as soon as playback starts. The view is therefore recorded even when the participant watches only a small part of the video. If playback reaches the end, the completed checkmark is also recorded.
This differs from a video uploaded to the native Eurekos video service, where Viewed status is based on the configured percentage of the video timeline. Native videos also support richer engagement information, enrichment, versioning, usage references, and management through the video archive.
Treat an embedded-video view as evidence that playback started—not as proof that the participant watched the complete video or understood its content. When complete viewing or comprehension must be demonstrated, use an appropriate native video, assessment, acknowledgement, or facilitated follow-up.

Create HTML embeds, code, and mathematical content
Add an HTML embed
Use HTML when an approved external service supplies embed code that the HTML object accepts and the experience should appear directly on the Course page.
Common examples include:
- An external questionnaire or survey that is used across several organizational channels and intentionally administered and reported outside Eurekos.
- A calculator, product configurator, compliance lookup, or interactive visualization maintained by a specialist service.
- A map, dashboard, reference viewer, or other resource maintained by another internal team or authoritative external provider.
Enter the approved markup in the HTML view and use Preview to inspect the result before saving. Unsupported or unsafe markup may be removed, and script execution is not allowed. Do not modify the provider's code to bypass security or embedding restrictions.
The external service determines whether the content is public, private, or requires a separate login. It also controls permissions, cookies, data collection, accessibility, availability, and reporting. Content requiring authentication may display a login inside the embedded area, open another view, or fail to load when the provider, browser, or organizational security policy prevents embedded sign-in. Test the saved page with a representative learner account and provide a descriptive external link when a reliable fallback is needed.
Eurekos can record that the learner visited the Course page and can identify the external reference in the External Resources Report. It does not automatically receive questionnaire answers, button selections, scores, completion events, or other actions performed inside the external service. Review that information in the external service unless a supported integration has been established.
If an external result must affect Eurekos progress, certification, or automation, use a native Questionnaire, supported assessment, or approved integration that explicitly returns the required evidence.
Add a Code snippet
Code snippet provides a language selector and a code editor. Choose the language that matches the example so syntax highlighting is meaningful. Learners can copy the displayed code or open it in full screen.
The object displays code; it does not execute it. Its maximum display height is configurable, so long examples may require scrolling. Keep the example focused and provide an approved execution environment separately when practice is required.
Add mathematical content
Math is available when the MathJax object is enabled in the editing-interface settings. Enter supported mathematical markup, use Preview to confirm the result, and use Auto scroll to keep the input and preview aligned while reviewing longer content.
Define variables and units in ordinary text and provide a textual explanation when the rendered expression alone is not sufficiently accessible.
Collect Page Feedback
Page Feedback gives learners a quick way to indicate whether a Course page was useful without completing another Questionnaire. It is suitable when a simple page-level sentiment signal is sufficient and repeated questionnaires would create unnecessary feedback fatigue.
Add Page Feedback to selected pages or meaningful checkpoints where the response can inform a content review. It does not need to appear on every page.
The object adds an upvote and downvote control and can be added once per Course page. Use Edit to configure its basic styling. There is no separate Settings action because it would duplicate the editing controls.
A learner can:
- Upvote or downvote the page
- Change from one response to the other
- Remove their response
The latest response is stored with the learner and Course page until the page is deleted.
Review Page Feedback in Analytics
To review the aggregated responses:
- Open Analytics → Content Engagement.
- Select the Training Activity.
- If the activity is a learning path, open the relevant Course module.
- Review the Pages analytics.
When Page Feedback is present, the Rating chart shows the number of upvotes and downvotes received by each page. The chart is hidden when the Course does not contain a Page Feedback object. Access to the results follows the role, organization, and activity scope applied to Content Engagement Analytics.
Interpret the reactions alongside page visits and average time spent. A large number or proportion of downvotes is a signal that the page may need investigation; it does not explain what participants disliked. Review the content and, where appropriate, follow up with a focused Questionnaire, discussion, or another approved research method.
Use Page Feedback for a low-effort sentiment check. Use a Questionnaire when you need reasons, structured questions, respondent-level review, or exportable results. Questionnaires are usually most effective at the end of a module or activity, although shorter questionnaires can be placed at deliberate points when they form part of the learning or facilitation design.

Use a configured Quickchannel video
Quickchannel appears only when the third-party integration is configured. Selecting the object opens the external video library. Search can use description, filename, tags, title, or video ID. Search begins after at least three characters; tag and video-ID searches require the full value. Filter results by the moderation status supplied by Quickchannel.
A video can be added when its status is Approved or Not approved and its publication period has not ended. Not moderated videos cannot be added. If the status or publication date later makes an inserted video unavailable, the Course builder and learner views show a content-unavailable placeholder. Authors can replace, anchor, cut, clone, hide, remove, or move the inserted object. Where the source provides them, learners can select an alternative audio track and activate a transcript.
Quickchannel playback can contribute to Progress and Content engagement analytics using the configured viewed threshold. That status indicates the tracking threshold was reached; it is not proof of understanding or competence.
Understand the dependencies
| Dependency | What to establish |
|---|---|
| External access | Whether learners need an account, license, organizational permission, or a particular network. |
| Embedding permission | Whether the provider allows its content to appear inside another site's page. |
| Privacy and data processing | Whether the service collects learner data or requires consent under the organization's approved process. |
| Availability | Who owns the external resource and how changes or outages are handled. |
| Mobile and accessibility | Whether controls, reading order, captions, keyboard access, and screen size meet the learner's needs. |
| Evidence | Whether the external interaction supplies supported learning evidence, or is only a resource. |
Opening a third-party page or completing an embedded task does not automatically create a passed result in Eurekos. Use a supported integration or assessment route when that evidence is required.
Present code and formulas clearly
Use a code snippet for a focused example, followed by an explanation of the relevant behavior. Avoid large dumps of production code containing confidential addresses, credentials, or customer data. Where learners must run code, explain the approved environment and expected result separately.
For formulas, define variables and units in normal text. A formula without context may render correctly but remain unusable. Provide a text explanation when the selected rendering does not offer an adequate accessible representation.
Common designs
| Need | Suitable presentation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A maintained external reference | A descriptive link with a short explanation of when to use it. | The authoritative source remains clear without adding embedding complexity. |
| An approved simulation | A supported embed plus instructions and a fallback route. | Learners practise in context while the service dependency is explicit. |
| Technical training | Short code snippets, expected outputs, and explanatory questions. | The example supports reasoning rather than becoming an unstructured file dump. |
| Quantitative procedure | Rendered formulas with defined terms and a worked example. | Learners understand both the calculation and its use. |
Troubleshooting
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| The embedded area is blank. | Check the provider's embedding restrictions, URL, availability, and supported markup. Use a normal link if embedding is not supported. |
| It works for the author but not learners. | Test external sign-in, licenses, organizational permissions, cookies, and network restrictions with the actual learner context. |
| HTML changes after saving. | The editor may remove unsupported or unsafe content. Do not attempt to bypass those safeguards; use an approved tool or integration. |
| The embed is difficult to use on mobile. | Review responsive sizing and nested scrolling. Consider a direct link or a more suitable format. |
| External completion does not affect Course progress. | Establish whether a supported reporting relationship exists. Visual completion in another service is not automatically Eurekos evidence. |
FAQ
-
Why does external content fail inside a Course even though its link works?
The external service may block embedding or require sign-in, cookies, permissions, or another browser context. Eurekos cannot remove those external requirements. Test with a learner account and offer an appropriate direct link when embedding is unsuitable.
-
Is displaying a code example the same as running the code?
No. A code-display tool presents an example for reading. Executable or embedded content introduces different security, hosting, and compatibility requirements. Use the supported tool for the intended purpose.
-
Can an embedded external service determine Course completion automatically?
Do not assume so. Displaying a service inside a page does not establish a supported reporting connection. Confirm the integration and its recorded results before using external activity as completion or certification evidence.
-
Who should maintain an external resource embedded in a Course?
Assign an owner for the link, service access, licensing, availability, and content accuracy. Review dependencies when the external provider changes. The resource remains an external operational dependency even when it appears inside the Course.
